Authorities in Thailand recently arrested a woman named Wilawan Emsawat for blackmailing several senior Buddhist monks. According to reports, Wilawan got into romantic relationships and later used those connections to blackmail them into giving her money. In one such case, Emsawat allegedly claimed to be pregnant and demanded over 7.2 million baht from a monk who eventually decided to later flee the monkhood.
Wilawan’s scheme eventually unraveled following the sudden disappearance of Phra Thep Wachirapamok, a highly respected Bangkok monk. Upon investigation, police traced digital and financial evidence back to Wilawan and eventually discovered a calculated operation that exploited religion for personal gain.

Charges and allegations
Authorities have arrested Wilawan and charged her with extortion, money laundering, and receiving stolen property. Police have also seized multiple mobile phones from her home, containing tens of thousands of explicit images and videos involving monks. Wilawan’s financial records have revealed over 385 million baht (around $11.9 million) passed through her accounts over a span of just three years. According to investigators, most of this amount came from temple-linked funds and it was spent on online gambling. The incident has caused at least nine senior monks to be disrobed.
