Travis Decker (32) is a former U.S. Army infantryman who served from March 2013 to July 2021, deploying to Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne in 2014 and later training at Fort Benning.
After leaving the Army he struggled with PTSD, drifted between campgrounds around Wenatchee, WA, and was living out of a white 2017 GMC Sierra pickup and during a court-approved visitation on May 30 2025, Decker failed to return his three daughters—Paityn (9), Evelyn (8) and Olivia (5).
He failed to bring the girls back to his ex-wife, Whitney Decker, in Wenatchee, Wash. The three girls died of asphyxiation and their wrists were zip tied or showed signs of being zip tied, and they were all found with a plastic bag over her head.

On June 2 deputies found the truck and the girls’ bodies at Rock Island Campground; each had a plastic bag over her head and at least one was zip-tied and Tucker is wanted on three counts of first-degree murder and kidnapping, with a $20,000 U.S. Marshals reward.
According to a statement issued by Whitney’s attorney, Ariana Cozart, Travis and Whitney had been married for just over seven years. When they had met, Travis had recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger. From the outset, he appeared to suffer from mental health issues, likely tied to complex PTSD from combat experience. Although he had never shown violence toward Whitney or the girls, his declining mental state had ultimately led to the dissolution of their marriage in 2022.
Court documents have shed light on the custody battle between Travis and Whitney Decker, before the death of their three daughters revealing a history of instability and emotional challenges and the couple divorced in November 2022, initially agreeing on a parenting plan that split responsibilities for their three children amicably.
However, that changed in September 2024 after Whitney revealed her husband’s erratic behavior and Travis was granted visitation every other weekend on Friday evenings, Saturday and Sunday during restricted time periods.
“Since our separation it has become increasingly clear that Travis has been struggling to maintain stability in his life, particularly with securing a consistent place to live and establishing a predictable schedule. This lack of stability has unfortunately had a negative impact on our children,” Whitney stated in the court documents.
Despite sporadic attempts to seek help through the VA, he had struggled to meet the agency’s requirements for receiving sustained support. Court filings suggested that by the end of their relationship, Travis had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and had not been on any medication and Whitney was said to have cited his mental instability as a key reason for filing for divorce.
In those documents, she had expressed concern over how his condition had affected the children and contributed to the breakdown of their marriage. She had also highlighted a recent escalation in Travis’s behavior, recalling instances where he had forced his way into her home and shouted for the children. She had warned that his condition seemed to be worsening and insisted that while he deeply loved his daughters and had made sacrifices in military service, he needed to seek help—for their sake.
Decker is a Pewaukee native living in Wenatchee, Washington state and at the time of his girls’ disappearance, Decker was living out of his pickup truck or occasionally motels and campgrounds, police said. He also has extensive military training and went to mountain survival school.
Decker who is believed to be a Christian, graduated from Pewaukee High School, where he was a member of the 2010 Pewaukee wrestling team and wrestled in the state finals.

Whitney’s friend, Amy Edwards, had launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her. Describing herself as both a fellow dance mom and theatre colleague, Amy had mentioned that she had taught Whitney’s daughters through the Short Shakespeareans program and had worked closely with the family through their involvement in dance.
