A 55-year-old man, Daniel Palmer III, was charged with attempted murder and malicious wounding attack to his sister for June 2020 which left his sister Wanda Palmer in a comatose state for 2 years.

On June 10, 2020, the neighbors of Palmer found Wanda unconscious with critical head injuries at her Flatwoods Road residence. According to the Responding officers, they found the victim severely injured and slumped over on the couch.
What did the Sheriff say?
In an Interview with Fox 11, Sheriff Ross Mellinger said after Palmer’s arrest on Friday, July 15th that, “From an investigator’s standpoint, this is about as rare as it gets. I think it’s a true testament to the perseverance and the strength of the victim herself”.
The Sheriff said that as of yet, investigators have not been able to recover any weapons. The court records suggested that the siblings had a ‘violent history’. He further said that Daniel Palmer is an early suspect in the investigation.
However, there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him until he was identified by his own sister as her alleged perpetrator. Officers had reportedly conducted an interview with Daniel in which he had denied any kind of involvement. He also said that he hadn’t visited his sister’s home in days.
Although a witness did identify him as seeing in front of Wanda’s residence doorway at the night she was assaulted. Sheriff Mellinger said in his statement that, “We’ve been all over the state trying to eliminate suspects, develop leads, execute search warrants.:
A deputy received a call from a worker of Wanda’s Adult Protective Services on June 27th informing that Wanda had started to utter a few words and apparently she started to respond when asked a question.
Then two deputies visited her nursing home facility in New Martinsville on July 12th. One of the deputies noted how Wanda recalled living in her trailer near her mother’s home and upon being asked she also remembered being hurt there.
The deputy wrote in the criminal complaint that, “She made mention of her head”, before noting how she identified her brother as the one who attacked her.
He further wrote, “When asked why Daniel assaulted her, Wanda stated that ‘he was mean”. The deputies also noted that Wanda appeared”oriented” to her situation and that her answers were “coherent” and “relevant”. As per the documents, she even “asked for prayer”.
Daniel was in custody until on Friday Morning but reportedly didn’t he co-operate and was arraigned by a Magistrate. Reportedly, the Magistrate himself came to the Sheriff’s office to do the arraignment because Daniel was so combative.
According to a report by Fox 11, Daniel’s bond was set at $500K and he was taken to the South Central Regional Jail.
