While reports initially stated that all 242 people on board died, one of them has miraculously survived.
Air India passenger Vishwash Kumar Ramesh Bucharvada survives tragic plane crash
A 40-year-old man, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh Bucharvada, seemingly managed to survive the tragic crash in Gujarat after jumping from the aircraft moments before it exploded. Ramesh was seated in seat 11A, which is a window seat in the economy class cabin of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Ramesh’s specific location on the plane played a major role in his miraculous escape.
As relatives of those aboard the Air India flight looked for their loved ones at the Civil Hospital, Asarwa in Ahmedabad, on a bed in the general ward, 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh survived the deadly crash.
Vishwash, a British national, was in India for a few days to visit his family and was going back to the UK along with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh (45) who is believed to be dead.
Vishwash has lived in London for 20 years and his wife and child too live in London.
Vishwas Ramesh Kumar said, “After the accident there was a huge explosion, there were flames all around. I was brought to the hospital in an ambulance. I cannot believe that I am alive, this is nothing less than a miracle.”
He said that his brother Ajay was seated in a different row on the plane, “We visited Diu. He was travelling with me and I can’t find him anymore. Please help me find him.”
Air India said 169 of the 230 passengers were Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese and one Canadian.

Ramesh escaped with severe injuries but still managed to stay alive miraculously, considering that the 204 others on board were confirmed dead. A viral video that was captured shortly after the crash showed Ramesh limping away from the wreckage, dazed and bloodied. Following the crash, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik confirmed Ramesh’s survival and stated,
We found one survivor, seated in 11A. He is now under medical care. The final death toll is still being verified, but 204 fatalities have been confirmed so far.”

According to official reports, Air India flight AI171 took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at around 1:39 p.m. The plane was en route to London Gatwick, but within seconds of take-off, the plane seemingly lost contact with air traffic control before crashing just barely a minute later. The plane crashed only after having climbed about 625 feet, destroying multiple buildings in Meghani Nagar. One of the buildings destroyed included a part of the B. J. Medical College and Hospital campus.
Air India has reportedly set up two dedicated helplines in response to the tragic incident: 1800 5691 444 for domestic callers and +91 8062779200 for foreign nationals. Moreover, the airline has also promised full cooperation with the ongoing investigation in order to ascertain the exact cause behind the devastating crash.
