The body of Viraj Ishwar Phad, an 18-year-old resident of Kothrud, Pune, who had been reported missing earlier in the week, was reportedly recovered from the Devkund View Point gorge in Tamhini Ghat on Saturday evening. Sources mentioned that the recovery operation, which concluded around 8 PM, involved multiple rescue teams and advanced equipment.

Age 18 Viraj of Pune had been unaccounted for since Monday, November 25. On Thursday, November 28, tourists at the Devkund View Point reportedly discovered a bag containing clothes and a mobile phone near the edge of a cliff. The belongings were handed over to staff at the nearby Plus Valley Hotel, who then informed the Mulshi Police. Officer Mahesh Pawar later activated the mobile phone and confirmed its ownership after receiving calls from Viraj’s concerned family and friends.

How the authorities rescued Viraj’s body?

After the discovery of personal belongings, a coordinated search operation was reportedly launched to locate Viraj. Notably, the Mulshi Police initiated the search around the Devkund View Point area and  meanwhile, RESQ Charitable Trust utilized a drone, which identified additional evidence, including a slipper believed to belong to Viraj. It was mentioned that further assistance was sought from the Sahyadri Wildlife Conservation Society and Deepak Nitrate Limited.

Rescue personnel, equipped with ropes and safety gear, reportedly descended the steep ravine and discovered Viraj’s body beneath a tree in a remote area. Despite the challenging terrain, the team managed to retrieve the body using stretchers and other tools. The remains were then handed over to the Pune rural Police for further investigation.

The success of the operation was attributed to the seamless collaboration among the Mulshi Police, Shelar Mama Rescue Team, RESQ Charitable Trust, and other supporting organizations. Despite the rugged conditions, their combined efforts ensured the recovery. Authorities have since emphasized the inherent dangers of exploring terrains like Tamhini Ghat, urging visitors to prioritize safety and adhere to guidelines to avoid such tragedies.
