Vincent Iwuchukwu cardiac arrest

Just last year, Vincent Iwuchukwu suffered a cardiac arrest while performing a summer workout. Fortunately, USC assistant coach Eric Mobley noticed a difference in the way Iwuchukwu grabbed a rebound. While taking a break, Mobley quickly called over head coach Andy Enfield and informed him that Iwuchukwu “didn’t look right.”

Iwuchukwu soon collapsed, and USC trainers Jon Yonamine, Erin Tillman and Lauren Crawford immediately responded to the incident. The trio deployed the automated external defibrillator (AED) and administered CPR on him. Meanwhile, Mobley kept yelling at Iwuchukwu to get up.

Following the incident, Vincent shared his recounts of what happened, stating:

[I] sat down, and I just got, like, super dizzy out of nowhere. … I was about to drink my water, and I was like, ‘Bro, I’m so dizzy. And bam. That’s all I remembered.”

He also explained how he got up saying:

I started hearing coach Mobley’s voice, like, ‘Get up, Vince! Get up, Vince! Don’t die on me!'” Iwuchukwu said. “In my head, I was like, ‘Don’t die on me? What does he mean don’t die?’ So I’m like, ‘I gotta get up.’”

Although there were no clear explanations for the incident, officials described it as a “freak accident”.

Vincent Iwuchukwu road to recovery

Vincent’s heart condition left him with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in his chest, for regulating his heart rate.  During the early parts of his road to recovery, Iwuchukwu had doubts of ever being able to play basketball again. However, after months of working with the training staff, he eventually made his USC debut on January 12. The match ended in a 68-61 win over Colorado. Following the game, Iwuchukwu stated how he felt like part of his journey is complete. He shared how he had spent seven long months in recovery and saw the game as a checkpoint.
