Who is Vijay Darda?
Vijay Jawaharlal Darda was born on May 14, 1950, in Yavatmal, Maharashtra. He completed his education at Government Multipurpose High School, Yavatmal. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Arts at Harvard University, Massachusetts, and his diploma in Journalism and Printing Technology at Bhavans College in 1970.
Later, he pursued media as his profession and soon joined politics.
Vijay Dardaโs Personal Life
He was born to Jawaharlal Darda and Veenadevi Darda. His father was a renowned freedom fighter, the Cabinet Minister of Energy and Industry of Maharashtra, and the founder of Lokmat publications.
His brother, Rajendra Darda, also served as MLA from Aurangabad East Assembly three times from 1998. He was also a Maharashtra cabinet minister of Education and Industry.
On February 16, 1971, he got married to Jyotsna Desai, who lost her battle with cancer on March 23, 2013. The couple together had one son, Devendra, and a daughter, Purva.
Vijay Dardaโs Career in Journalism And As An Entrepreneur
On December 15, 1971, Darda became the head of the Marathi newspaper Lokamt and later launched Lokmat in English and Hindi. He was the President of the Indian Newspaper Society (1997โ1998) and Chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulation (2010โ2011).
A significant accomplishment of his was the founding of the South Asian Editors Forum (SAEF) in 1999. He had been a member of multiple organisations throughout his career.
Vijay Dardaโs Career In Politics
In 1998, 2004, and 2010, Darda became a Rajya Sabha member. He was a member of the Indian National Congress. He has served on various parliamentary, central, and state government committees and delegations. He has also presented 33 Private Member bills, including a Constitutional Amendment Bill.
He has also published several books and worked for many social causes.
