Victoria Gowri career
In early 2010, Victoria Gowri got appointed as head of the Women’s Wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) based in Tamil Nadu. Gowri campaigned for the party in 2014 during the Indian general election. In 2015, the union government led by BJP appointed her as a senior standing counsel at Madras High Court. Five years later, Victoria Gowri was recruited as an assistant solicitor general for the union government.
On the 17th of January 2023, the Collegium of the Supreme Court of India assented to her elevation as a judge of the Madras High Court. About a fortnight later on, it was alleged that Gowri had given hate speeches against different religious minorities including Christians and Muslims. She was noted for propagating the Islamophobic conspiratorial theory of the Love for jihad among other comparable views.
On the 1st of February, a few lawyers petitioned the President of India for withdrawing her appointment and then went on to file the case before the Supreme Court of India, praying for the same reliefs. On the 6th of January 2023, the Chief Justice of India who heads the Collegium constituted a two-judge bench for deciding on an issue about a week later in oral remarks.
A few minutes after the decision was made, the Government accepted Collegium’s recommendation, and the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court requested her for taking an oath, the next day.
The scheduled hearing was preponed and it was held before the bench of Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai and Sanjay Kishan Kaul on the morning of 7th January. They have dismissed cases upon oral hearing, refusing to challenge the wisdom of the collegium and then enter into adjudicating the “suitability” of a judge.
