The story of 49-year-old Dr. Kwane Stewart began with a solid foundation in veterinary medicine, graduating from the Veterinary program at Colorado State University in 2002. His commitment to honing clinical skills led him through various roles, starting as an associate clinician in San Diego and eventually ascending to the position of Chief Medical Officer at Vetco Hospitals Inc.
In his role as the County Veterinarian for the Stanislaus Animal Service Agency, he not only showcased clinical expertise but also played a pivotal role in significantly reducing euthanasia rates for animals across the U.S.
However, it was in the face of adversity during the 2008 financial crisis that Dr. Stewart decided to redirect his efforts. Witnessing the rise in the homeless population and their pets, he took a proactive stance. In 2011, he established a place offering free food to the homeless and providing check-ups for their pets. This marked the inception of “Project Street Vet,” a non-profit public charity that would soon become the epitome of his dedication to the well-being of animals and their owners.
Armed with compassion and a mobile clinic, he tirelessly travels around California, offering vaccinations, flea treatments, and more. His services extend beyond routine care; he has treated a spectrum of illnesses, from allergies and bad teeth to skin infections and arthritis.
Remarkably, he covers the costs of these treatments out of his own pocket, exemplifying a level of personal commitment rarely seen in today’s fast-paced world.
For more severe conditions requiring surgery or extensive medical care, Dr. Stewart turns to crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe. This innovative approach ensures that pets in critical condition receive the necessary care, showcasing his resourcefulness in overcoming financial barriers to animal health.
Dr. Stewart’s impact extends beyond his physical presence. In May 2023, he authored a book titled “What It Takes to Save a Life: A Veterinarian’s Quest for Healing and Hope.” The book serves as a window into his experiences, shedding light on the challenges faced by homeless individuals and their pets, as well as the transformative power of kindness.
Being named the CNN Hero of the Year in 2023 is a testament to Dr. Stewart’s extraordinary contributions. During the 17th Annual CNN Heroes event at New York City’s American Museum of Natural History, he was not only awarded this prestigious title but also received an additional $100,000 in prize money.
