On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, a second-year BCA student named Vasavi Tomar was found lifeless in her hostel room at Graphic Era Hill University in Uttarakhand. Vasavi’s death has triggered a wave of grief and outrage across social media as well as among student communities. Her mother, Binu Singh, remembered her in her statement as a strong-willed, compassionate girl who always stood up for what was right. As of now, the university has claimed that Vasavi died by hanging, but her family strongly argues that she died by suicide. Vasavi’s brother, Ayush Singh, stated the postmortem report points to strangulation and not suicide. Her family argues that the suicide narrative doesn’t add up, particularly since she had made plans to come home for Raksha Bandhan on August 7 and also had shown no signs of depression.
They stated how Vasavi had recently tried to protect her roommate, who was a first-year nursing student, from senior students attempting to rag her. She allegedly received threats and even recorded a video argument with one of the seniors the night before her death. Vasavi’s family also claims that the administration has not shared the alleged suicide note and is reportedly silencing other students in the hostel.
