Varinder Singh, an Olympic and World Cup medalist who played a crucial role in some of India’s greatest victories in the 1970s passed away in Jalandhar.
Varinder Singh, an Olympic and World Cup medalist who played a key role in some of India’s greatest victories in the 1970s passed away on Tuesday morning in Jalandhar. He was 75. Varinder Singh competed for the Indian men’s hockey team that won the gold medal in the 1975 Men’s Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. This is still India’s only gold medal from the illustrious competition, as the nation defeated Pakistan 2-1 in the championship match.
Singh also competed for the teams that won the bronze medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and the silver medal in the 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam. At the Asian Games in 1974 and 1978, he also took home a silver medal. The renowned Indian hockey player also took part in the Montreal Olympics in 1975.
Varinder received the renowned Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Hockey India mourned Singh’s passing.
