Alison Gibson experiences tragic accident at Paris 2024
The tragic incident took place as Alison Gibson competed in the women’s 3m springboard event at the Paris Games on August 7, 2024. Gibson was launching into her first dive during the event’s preliminary round when she made contact with the board. As a result, the judges counted it as a non-dive and award zero points. Alison reportedly collided into the springboard with her feet while in a tucked position.
Alison Gibson sustains injuries
Following the incident, Gibson reportedly sustained cuts and bruises and even posted an Instagram Story with a walking boot. She stated the following on Substack:
Even though my competition didn’t go the way I wanted. And even though I feel like the world is trying to tear me down piece by piece and leave me shattered, I will keep my chin up because I know that my value and worth come from God.
… I do not know God’s plan. I do not know why he would allow this, but I must continue persevering, and I hope that my willingness to persevere and fight on can inspire those around me.”

Alison Gibson is an American diver who was born on July 9, 1999, in Houston, Texas, United States of America. The young springboard diver recently went viral following her tragic crash at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. She has so far competed across two Olympic events.

Career and achievements
During her time in college, Gibson was a part of the University of Texas team and won the NCAA diving event in 2017. Despite still in college, Gibson had represented the USA at the FINA Diving World Cup, World University Games, and a couple of FINA World Championships. Alison Gibson also won several awards including a four-time All-American, three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American, as well as a three-time Big 12 Champion.

Back in 2021, Gibson qualified for the 2020 Olympics in the women’s synchronized 3 metre springboard. She competed in the event alongside her partner Krysta Palmer after winning the U.S. Olympic Trials. Earlier this year, Gibson won gold at the 2024 American Cup in the three-meter springboard category. Gibson is a three-time World Championships team member, as well as a gold medallist at FINA USA Grand Prix. She also won a gold at a Junior Pan American Championships, and a three-time Junior National Champion.
