Recently on Friday, a Spanish tourist was rap*d by a group of people while traveling with her husband in Jharkhand. This news received a lot of attention on foreign media and has made many people around the world angry. Rekha Sharma, who leads the National Commission for Women, got into a heated argument on social media with David Josef Volodzko, a writer based in the US, about this incident on Sunday night.
The author tweeted that during his time living in India, he saw a lot of sex*al aggression, which was worse than anywhere else they’d been. He mentioned that even female travelers he met were often groped, assaulted, or worse, sometimes within days of arriving in the country. Despite loving India and considering it one of their favorite places, he advised female friends against traveling there alone.
He believes this issue in Indian society needs more attention and hope it gets better over time. Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and authorities are searching for the other four suspects. Sharma, however, said that India takes women’s safety seriously. She replied to the writer’s post, asking if they reported the incident to the police, and criticized them for just posting on social media and blaming the whole country.
The National Commission for Women had already condemned the gang-r*pe and sent a letter to officials to speed up the investigation.
