U.S. Soccer announces BJ Callaghan as new USMNT manager

The U.S. Soccer made the announcement on Tuesday that assistant coach BJ Callaghan will now serve as the newly appointed head coach of the men’s team. The move comes following the departure of former interim manager Anthony Hudson. Hudson reportedly left to pursue another managerial role in the Middle East. The U.S. Soccer is expected to hire a new permanent head coach by the end of summer.

BJ Callaghan brief bio and age

Brian Joseph Callaghan II is an American soccer coach born July 1, 1981 in Ventnor City, New Jersey. He is currently 41 years old and is the new interim head coach of the United States men’s national team. Prior to becoming a coach, he was also a soccer player during his time in school and college.

BJ Callaghan now lives in Chicago, where the USMNT is based, with his wife, Leigh, and daughters, Lili, 13, and Avery, 11.

BJ Callaghan player career

Callaghan started out playing prep soccer at Holy Spirit High School in New Jersey. He eventually played collegiately at Ursinus College from 1999-2003. Following which, he graduated from there in 2003 with a B.A. degree in economics and business administration.

BJ Callaghan coaching career

Callaghan began his coaching career as an assistant, shortly after his graduation in 2003 at his alma mater, Ursinus College. He also went on to serve in similar roles at Saint Joseph’s and Villanova before landing his first major gig.

After working as a collegiate assistant from 2003 to 2012, Callaghan became a full-time assistant coach with the MLS side Philadelphia Union in 2013. He served in that role up until 2018 before he left to become an assistant coach and strategy analyst with the USMNT. He worked under Gregg Berhalter’s staff. Callaghan eventually remained on Hudson’s staff after Berhalter’s left when his contract expired on Dec. 31, 2022. Callaghan is now the interim head coach after Hudson’s departure.
