Having travelled 30,000 miles over 130 days, she finally arrived in A Coruna, Spain, on Thursday. She finished second out of sixteen enthusiastic sailors who took part in the Global Solo Challenge, a ten-nation circumnavigation race that began in A Coruna.

Who is Cole Brauer?

Cole Brauer is a 5-foot-2 Ameircan sailor who was born in 1994 or 1995 and is native of East Hampton, New York. The 29-year-old becomes the first female American to compete in solo, round-the-world sailboat racing.

A look at Cole Brauer’s career

Born and raised in Long Island, New York, Brauer completed her high school education at East Hampton in 2012. She studied nutritional science at the University of Hawaii, where she also participated in sailing competitions and rose to the position of team captain.

She learned to sail in college and changed her career goal from becoming a doctor to becoming a sailor. Brauer relocated to Boothbay, Maine, her present home, after graduating. There, she started her career as a teacher at the Boothbay Harbour Yacht Club and as a boat delivery sailor throughout the Atlantic Coast.

During the year 2018, Brauer obtained her 100-ton captain licence. The first woman to win the 668 nautical mile Bermuda One-Two race since its start, Brauer and her co-skipper Cat Chimney did so in June 2023, winning both legs of the race from Rhode Island to Bermuda and back.

By sailing a Class 40 boat called First Light, she achieved a new world speed record for the class on March 7, 2024, and came in second place in the 2023–2024 Global Solo Challenge.

When Brauer landed in A Coruna, Spain on Thursday, she became the first American woman to race solo around the globe nonstop.
