Santi Cazorla wrote one of football’s greatest stories by helping his boyhood club Oviedo return to Spain’s top division. A victory in the play-off final in front of 30,000 fans ended a 24-year absence from LaLiga and create a memorable finale to the 40-year-old’s career. Having played 180 games for Arsenal and won two FA Cups, Cazorla also attracted interest in joining the coaching staff alongside his close friend Mikel Arteta.
Nearly a decade ago, serious injury threatened his career, with doctors warning he might never play professionally again and suggesting he be grateful just to kick a ball in his garden with his son. Defying this prognosis, he returned to professional football after a 22-month absence following a complex Achilles tendon reconstruction. After signing with Oviedo, Cazorla committed to leading the club to promotion.

Born in Oviedo, he joined the club’s youth academy at eight during a long spell in the top flight. Financial troubles forced Oviedo to sell him to Villarreal at 18 before he made his senior debut. By the time he played his first La Liga match with Villarreal in 2003, Oviedo had dropped to the fourth division and almost went bankrupt in 2012. Cazorla joined Arsenal in 2012, scoring in the 2014 FA Cup final and winning the trophy again in 2015.
His injury battle was brutal. A bacterial infection destroyed a large part of his Achilles tendon and ankle bone. Surgeons rebuilt the tendon using tissue from his hamstring, arm, and thigh. Cazorla likened his body to a jigsaw puzzle after the extensive surgery. Cazorla returned to play for Villarreal, then had a spell in Qatar, before signing with Oviedo in 2023. Although league rules required him to accept a minimum wage contract, he was willing to play for free. His wife Ursula insisted the move was about returning home to enjoy football, not money.
He played 24 games last season but suffered heartbreak in the play-off final. This season, with nearly twice the minutes played, confidence grew that promotion was achievable. For Cazorla, reaching LaLiga with Oviedo would rank alongside winning the European Championship. If promoted, the club plans to ask him to sign for one final season in the top flight. At 41 and after ten surgeries, he experiences daily discomfort, though playing no longer causes pain.
