Lieutenant General Dwivedi held the position of the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff since February 2024 and prior to this, he served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command in the Union Territories of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh from February 2022-2024.
59-year-old Upendra Dwivedi was born on 1 July 1964. He is 5ft 6in tall.
Upendra Dwivedi attended Sainik School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. After that, he attended the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun and the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla. The general officer received the title of “Distinguished Fellow” in the highly sought-after NDC comparable course at United States Army War College, Carlisle, USA.

He also attended Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the Higher Command Course at Army War College, Mhow. His distinguished military career is further enhanced by a M Phil in Defence & Management Studies, two Master’s degrees in Military Science and Strategic Studies, one of which is from the United States Army War College. Additionally, he has written and presented essays for a number of periodicals and professional forums.
He is married to Sunita Dwivedi, a homemaker and graduate in science and they are parents to two girls.
Upendra Dwivedi career
On December 15, 1984, General Dwivedi was commissioned into the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles’ 18th battalion at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. He has served as Inspector General of the Assam Rifles in Assam, commanded a battalion at Chowkibal in the Kashmir Valley during Operation Rakshak, and led a sector of the Assam Rifles in Manipur during Operation Rhino in the Rajasthani deserts.
He has also held a number of staff and command positions in the Northeast. He was designated as the commander of IX Corps in February 2020. He assumed the position of Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (Information Systems and Coordination) in April 2021, one year later.
He became the General Officer Commanding in Chief of Northern Command on February 1, 2022, after Lieutenant General Yogesh Kumar Joshi retired. Lieutenant General M. V. Suchindra Kumar, the 46th Vice Chief of Army Staff, was replaced as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, on February 19, 2024, by Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi.
