Chen was running the Xin’anjiang Marathon in Jiande, China, where he finished in 574th place out of nearly 1,500 runners. Pictures of Chen smoking have gone viral on Weibo, with the marathon’s organizers also congratulating his accomplishment by posting a photo of his finishing certificate.
Reportedly, this is not the first time that the 50-year-old Guangzhou runner smoked his way to the finish line. Chen was previously pictured smoking in the both the 2018 and 2019 Xiamen Marathons.
Surprisingly, Chen is not even a regular smoker and smokes only when he runs. Although there are no clear as to why he Chen smokes while running, it probably has something to do with nicotine acting as a stimulant. Chen previously also completed a 50-mile run in 12 hours and he is an accomplished ultramarathoner.
Mixed Views On Weibo
Chen’s actions have caught mixed reviews from different people on Weibo. Some have shared their frustration that organizers allowed Chen to smoke during the race.
A person commented:
This type of behaviour should be banned from the race
While another person commented:
I feel bad for the runners around him
While another user commented:
Running is good for your health, smoking is bad for your health. Do they cancel each other out?
Technically speaking, there are no rules in a marathon stating that a person cannot smoke while running a marathon race. This is because most people understand that smoking while running would hinder their performance.
But Uncle Chen’s performances clearly seems to be an exception, although an exception that shouldn’t be encouraged.
