Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, was fatally shot on Friday night at his home in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, according to police.

For the uninitiated, after beating former MP Atiq Ahmed’s younger brother Khalid Azim to win the Allahabad (West) assembly seat in his first election, Raju Pal was assassinated a few months later. The main suspects in his murder are Atiq Ahmed, his brother, and former MLA Ashraf. All suspects are currently incarcerated.
Now, his close friend Umesh Pal was shot and killed by an unidentified guy as he exited the Hyundai Creta SUV’s backseat in Prayagraj. Surveillance footage captures him and one of his two police bodyguards exiting the vehicle just before a guy shoots him from behind.
What is the relationship between Umesh Pal and MLA Raju Pal?
According to reports, Umesh Pal was MLA Raju Pal’s childhood friend when he was out of public life and politics. They had a family-like relationship. They used to go to each other’s homes, eat dinner, and share drinks every day.
Umesh Pal along with his gunner Sandeep Nishad died in the attack on Friday evening while on the other hand, another gunner Raghavendra Singh is admitted in the hospital in critical condition. The family members of Umesh Pal have told the hand of Bahubali leader Atiq Ahmed behind this murder who is currently lodged in jail.
Umesh Pal who was the brother of SP MLA Pooja Pal. Umesh Pal, the main witness in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, was abducted in 2007. The abductors had asked him not to testify in the Raju Pal murder case and in this case, Umesh Pal lodged an FIR at Dhumanganj police station in Prayagraj.
Along with others, former MP Atiq Ahmed and his younger brother and former MLA Khalid Azim alias Ashraf were also made accused in this case and the hearing of this case is going on in the MP-MLA Special Court of Prayagraj. While Umesh’s DOB isn’t known, he is aged between 40-50 years.
Why was Umesh Pal killed?
Umesh Pal continued his childhood relationship with Raju even after he died. He was adamant about punishing Raju Pal’s murderers. He continued to represent clients from the High Court to the Supreme Court alongside Raju’s wife, Pooja Pal.
When the charge sheet against the killers was issued and the Supreme Court gave the CBI the probe into the death of Raju Pal, it was upon Pooja Pal’s recommendation. Since that time, Umesh Pal has been pleading with the High Court for an expedited hearing.
After successfully arguing a matter relating to the Raju Pal murder case, he exited the district court and headed home. A death cordon had been set up for him outside the home by the gunmen.
How was he murdered?
Significantly, Umesh Pal was shot outside his home on Saturday night and was the target of crude bomb attacks. Police reported that one of Pal’s bodyguards, who was also hurt in the shooting, later passed away at a hospital during the event. The government employed both gunners to protect Pal.
According to Umesh Pal’s post-mortem assessment, the attackers fired at least seven bullets, six of which found their way through the victim’s body while the seventh got caught between organs. The physicians discovered in an X-ray report that Umesh had a gunshot lodged in his torso, killing the key witness.
