Yaroslava Oleksiyivna Mahuchikh is a Ukrainian high jumper and women’s high jump world record holder who was born on September 19, 2001, in Dnipro, Ukraine. Yaroslava was born to parents, Oleksii Mahuchikh, and Olha Mahuchikh, and she is currently just 22 years old. Despite her young age, she has already won several Championships across different levels of competition. Mahuchikh attained her highest world ranking of World No. 1, in 2023.

Mahuchikh has been coached since she was 13 by Tetyana Stepanova and she has a net worth of $500,000-1 million.

Junior career

Yaroslava Mahuchikh started competing in the high jump at the young age of 13. She gained her breakthrough at the 2016 Ukrainian National Juniors Athletics Championships in Zaporizhzhia, where she won gold. By the age of 15, she won another gold at the 2017 IAAF World U18 Championships. Following the win, she won again at the European Youth Olympic Festival just a few weeks later.

Mahuchikh then won the European U18 Championships in 2018 while setting a new championship record. That same year in October, she won the gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Yaroslava Mahuchikh then won the inaugural Diamond League high jump event in Doha. She became the youngest-ever athlete to win a Diamond League event, aged 17 years and 226 days.

Senior career and achievements

Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the silver medal at the World Championships in Doha, breaking the world U20 record. The following year, in January 2020, Mahuchikh set a new world U20 indoor record at 2.01 m and broke it again a few days later, jumping over 2.02 m. As a result, she was crowned as the overall winner of the World Indoor Tour. Mahuchikh won gold at the European Indoor Championships in 2021 and at the European U23 Championships.

That same year, Mahuchikh won the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. She then won a silver at the Diamond League Final in Zürich that same year. Mahuchikh won another gold at the 2022 World Indoor Championships, just days after fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Later that year, Mahuchikh won a silver medal at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, and then a gold at the Munich European Championships.

Mahuchikh also won the Brussels Diamond League high jump event and the Diamond League Final in Zürich. Mahuchikh then won the gold medal at the 2023 European Indoor Championships and the European Games. Yaroslava also won the 2023 World Championships and the Diamond League Final in 2023.

Earlier this year, in February 2024, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, won the gold medal at the Millrose Games. She also won the silver at the World Indoor Championships and just recently won the gold at the European Championships.

Just last month, Yaroslava Mahuchikh broke the world record by jumping 2.10 metres at the Wanda Diamond League in Paris. She has now won the gold at the Summer Olympics in Paris, after jumping 2.00 metres. She is Ukraine’s first individual gold winner at this year’s Summer Games following their women’s team sabre fencing win.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh was voted the 2019 European Athletics Female Rising Star as well as the 2019 World Athletics Female Rising Star. Mahuchikh also got nominated for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year 2023. She also received a nomination for the Women’s European Athlete of the Year according to European Athletic Association.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh is currently dating Ukrainian hurdles running recorder Nazar Stepanov since 2019. Interestingly, Stepanov is the son of Mahuchikh’s personal coach, Tetyana Stepanova.
