When it came time for Sarah Strong to ascend the ladder and cut off her portion of the net, the freshman from UConn moved cautiously and carefully thought out her strategy.

Chris Dailey, a longtime assistant, had just given the 19-year-old a brief introduction in the manner that only an 11-time champion could: where to cut and which area of the rim to focus on. However, a novice named Strong didn’t appear to be sure.

With her net piece in hand, she gave her supporters a sheepish wave after glancing around at the Amalie Arena crowd and grinning like a meme.

It was the turn of Azzi Fudd a few minutes later. Once approaching the hoop, the graduate guard wanted similar assurance and turned back to her teammates for some final instructions.

“Oh, baby,” she said as the scissors sliced through the white lace.

22-year-old Azzi Fudd was born on November 11, 2002 in Fairfax, VA but currently lives in Arlington. She is 5ft 11in tall with her weighing 165 pounds. Fudd’s parents played basketball together. Her father, Tim, played at American University, while her mother, Katie, played at Georgetown and NC State before being selected by the Sacramento Monarchs in the 2001 WNBA draft. Her mother adored the player Jennifer Azzi, who inspired her name.

The couple met while coaching at The Potomac School and got married on a basketball court. Since Katie grew up Catholic and they were already renting St. Joseph’s Catholic School gym for training, they figured, why not just get married there.

Katie Fudd (formerly Smrcka-Duffy), was a top-notch baller back in the day and kicked things off as ACC Rookie of the Year at NC State before transferring to Georgetown, where she became the second all-time leading scorer in program history. Tim played at American University, where he once averaged 19 points and 7 boards a game.

She has an elder brother named Thomas and two younger brothers, Jon and Jose, whom her parents adopted in 2011. Azzi attended the St. Johns’s College. She is currently single and unmarried.

She played for St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., which didn’t play in 2020-21 due to the pandemic.

Azzi Fudd won the three-point shooting competition at the SC30 Select program, an elite offseason training program led by two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry, and was among the first girls to participate before her sophomore year.

She tore the ACL and MCL in her right knee shortly after that season while competing in the U.S. under-18 3×3 championship final, which was used to choose the nation’s representatives to the FIBA U18 3×3 World Cup that year.

On November 10, 2022, Fudd made her season debut, scoring 26 points and dishing out four assists in a 98–39 victory over Northeastern.  On November 14, Fudd defeated third-ranked Texas 83-76 with a career-high 32 points and four assists. Fudd’s 56 points broke the previous record held by Diana Taurasi and set a new record for the most points ever scored by a UConn player in the season’s first two games.

Along with teammates Sarah Strong and Paige Bueckers, Fudd was selected to the All-Big East First Team at the conclusion of the 2025 regular season. Despite being eligible for the WNBA draft, she declared on March 25, 2025, that she will be returning to UConn for her last season. With 24 points, 5 rebounds, and MOP for her effort, Fudd won her maiden national championship on April 6, 2025.
