The Indian men’s badminton team made history on Sunday by winning their first Thomas Cup championship with a 3-0 victory against reigning champions Indonesia in the final.
India won the prized Thomas Cup trophy, the most prestigious championship in men’s team badminton, thanks to victories by Lakshya Sen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, and former World No 1 Kidambi Srikanth.
The former India international praised the team’s performance, calling the players amazing.
I’m at a loss for words to express it. I’ve never seen them that animated before. It was a true team effort. This has never happened before. “These are terrific players,” Vimal added.
Vimal also believed that the historic victory will have the same impact on badminton in India as cricket’s World Cup victory in 1983.
Career:
He won the French Open in 1983 and 1984, as well as the Welsh International Open in 1988 and 1991 and the Indian national title in 1988 and 1989. Vimal from Kerala also competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics for India and was considered among the top 20 athletes in the world. For numerous years, he was the Indian badminton team’s national chief coach.
While his exact age isn’t known, he is believed to be aged between 60-70 years with him taking home a salary close to Rs.1.5-2 lakhs per month.
In 2006, he left his job to focus on instructing kids at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy. In Bangalore, he is now tutoring top player Saina Nehwal. He is also Parupalli Kashyap’s coach. Kalidas Jayaram, a Malayalam cinema actor, is his nephew.
