During the competition that took place in San Antonio, Texas, Caldas seemingly dominated and left her competitors far behind.
Caldas’ performance caused quite the controversy in the sport as in the 50-yard breast stroke race, Caldas finished in 29.74 seconds, beating second place by more than three seconds.

Caldas was competing in the women’s 45-49 age group division, and her performances have further reignited the national debate around transgender participation in women’s sports.
Ana Caldas wins 5 races at national championship event
Ana Caldas is a transgender swimmer who recently dominated the U.S. Masters Swimming Spring Nationals. Caldas won a total of five gold medals in individual events. Aside from winning the events, she simply crushed the competition in the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke. Ana won with an astonishing four seconds ahead of the next swimmer and also won the 100-yard freestyle, with a three-second gap.
Reactions
Unsurprisingly, Ana Caldas’s win has sparked intense reactions online, with former collegiate swimmer and women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines calling the situation a “real-life South Park episode”. Riley also intentionally misgendered Caldas in her criticism. Meanwhile, activist Beth Bourne called the outcome “insanity” and noted that such dominating margins are simply not normal in sprint races. The Independent Council on Women’s Sports also described Ana’s victories as “absolutely insane” and accused her of mocking the sport.

Ana Caldas is a Brazilian-American competitive swimmer, who is also an artist and yoga instructor. Over the years, she has remained active in athletic circles, particularly in swimming through the U.S. Masters Swimming program. She is currently going viral following her dominant win across five swimming events under the women’s category. Ana Caldas has so far participated in numerous Masters-level swimming competitions over the years. Her recent performance at the 2025 Spring Nationals was her most high-profile achievement.
Ana Caldas has competed at the CrossFit Games three times and her most recent appearance was in the Women’s Masters 40-44 year-old division in 2021 where she placed 7th overall.
Ana, who has also gone by the name, Hannah, was born a biological male as Hugo Caldas. she was an Olympic hopeful back in 2012, but fell just short of qualifying for the London Olympics in the 50m freestyle by 0.3 seconds and that’s when Caldas turned to CrossFit.
The transgender swimmer won five women’s races at the U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championship last weekend as she dominated all five races the athlete competed in, taking gold in the women’s age 45-49 category in five races, including the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke, freestyle and the 100-yard individual medley.
