Paratici first started his time at Juventus directly reporting to Beppe Marotta, the club’s CEO who was also the man that brought him to Juve from Sampdoria. Under Paratici’s service, the club won 19 trophies in 11 seasons.

Fabio Paratici player career

As a footballer, Paratici played in the lower divisions of Italy as a central midfielder. His playing career was not really a very remarkable one. However, a unique quality he obtained by playing in the third division was his ability to spot talented players across all levels at any age.

Crazy transfer deals

Paratici is widely known for being the man who was brought in Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. However, Ronaldo’s signing is not the biggest one for him.

During his farewell conference at Juventus, while speaking about his proudest transfer, he said:

If I have to pick one, I go for [Andrea] Barzagli. He spent many years with us and he was massively underrated by many. We all know how important he was and what he gave to this club.

Barzagli joined the Bianconeri side from Wolfsburg back in January 2011 for just €300,000. Despite his small fee, Barzagli became one of Juventus’ core players in securing domestic domination over the years.

Paratici also famously became a sort of big-money transfer specialist after signing Cristiano Ronaldo for €112m in 2018, and later Matthijs de Ligt for €84m in 2019. However, Paratici also helped pull off some of the best value signings in Europe. Under his charge, Juventus were able to sign Paul Pogba twice on free transfer, followed by Dani Alves and Patrice Evra.

He made a statement in his farewell press conference which best suits his actions:

the best one at this job is not the one who makes no mistakes, but the one who makes the fewest

Long-term projects

Paratici is a man who believes in building long-term projects. During on one of his last press conferences in Turin, he admitted how he gets ‘really angry’ whenever he fails to sign some 15-year-old players.

The Italian director is clearly a man who intends to build ‘instant teams’. Paratici is a director who keeps in the mind the future of the club he is working for and puts his focus on building aspects of the club like the academy and bring in the best players at all the levels.

Troubling times

Paratici had his own share of troubling times in Turin. One of those was going under investigation over false claims in the Luis Suarez case. Back then, Suarez who was still at Barcelona offered his services to vice president Pavel Nedved. However, it was Paratici who was tasked with carrying out talks with his agent and Barcelona.

Since the Suarez’ EU work permit was not valid in Italy, he had to take a citizenship exam. However, the whole situation became a proper scandal. The rector and some of the University of Perugia’s university, where Suarez took his exam, were already under investigation for other reasons.

Their phones were tapped and as such, investigators quickly found out that Suarez was aware of the questions in advance. The whole situation tarnished Paratici’s name as well.

Paratici also had a situation where he was fined three times for disrespecting referees in 2020-21. Most notably, he had arguments with former Juventus’ CEO Beppe Marotta who.
