Tomas Roncero mocks “retired” Lionel Messi for unjustified Ballon d’Or wins and gets supported by Cristiano Ronaldo through comments

Lionel Messi recently won the record-breaking eighth Ballon d’Or at the ceremony. On October 30, during the 2023 ceremony in Paris, Messi received his eighth career gong from Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham.

36-year-old Messi, prevailed over Kylian Mbappe, his former PSG teammate, and Erling Haaland, a forward for Manchester City. Even though he left elite European football behind and missed the 2022 Ballon d’Or shortlist a year ago, Messi has reclaimed his title.

Messi currently holds a commanding lead in the record books with eight golden balls, three more than Ronaldo, who is in second place with five.

Messi’s most recent Ballon d’Or victory has taken an extremely interesting turn when Cristiano Ronaldo liked and commented on an Instagram picture that appeared to mock the Argentine.

That was one of a number of criticisms from AS and El Chiringuito journalist Tomas Roncero, who, as a massive Real Madrid fan, went after the Barcelona icon’s achievements. This year, the AS editor-in-chief thinks it should have been either of Manchester City’s treble winners, Erling Haaland and Rodri, with the latter deserving of a spot in the top three.

Significantly more unexpectedly, though, was Ronaldo’s like and commenting on a video that showed Roncero slamming Messi; posting five laughing and sobbing emoticons.

In a video that he uploaded, Spanish journalist Tomás Roncero stated:

Hello friends. What we knew happened, they were going to give Messi another Ballon d’Or again.

Further was said:

He went to retire in Miami, even though he already looked like he was retired at PSG preparing for the World Cup. He won the World Cup, yes, good, but with six penalties… The World Cup was ten months ago, it’s November.

Messi has eight Ballon d’Ors, he should have had five. He has Iniesta/Xavi’s Ballon d’Or, Lewandowski’s who won six trophies in one season and Haaland’s who was the top scorer.

The post was replied by the Portuguese star with laughing emoticons under it and the comment has now gone viral.

Lionel Messi’s outstanding World Cup performance won him the sport’s biggest individual honour. Of Argentina’s ten goals in Qatar, Messi scored seven and assisted on three. He scored twice in the encounter against France. After relocating to Inter Miami in the United States, Messi has already won his first trophy by leading the team to the U.S. Leagues Cup championship.
