Monojit Mishra of South Calcutta Law College, your vile actions will never be forgotten. While already in a relationship, you allegedly coerced another student using threats and intimidation, then raped her inside your own college when she tried to resist you.

Monojit Mishra’s political affiliation has sparked a massive outcry, with the opposition BJP accusing the TMC of shielding him. Photos circulating online show Mishra alongside senior TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee. Though the TMC acknowledged Mishra’s past association with its student wing, the party has publicly distanced itself from him in the wake of the allegations. A five-member SIT led by a senior police officer has been formed to investigate the case.
Zaib Ahmed, Pramit Mukhopadhyay and a security guard have been arrested in the case as well.
The victim, a 24 year old law student in her complaint, informed that she was asked to prove her ‘loyalty’ towards the prime accused, Monojit Mishra.
“I promised him to provide my loyalty towards him and the team as I was appointed as the girls’ secretary. So I gave him the faith of my support towards the unit,” she said. Although the victim refereed him as her ‘Dada (brother)’, he proposed marriage to her and Mishra claimed to be in love with the victim, besides his girlfriend. The victim turned down his s*xual advances by saying that she has a boyfriend.
“He called me outside and told me that from the very first day, he likes me and after his girlfriend, he is in love with someone, and that is me and gave a proposal for marriage. I denied saying I have a boyfriend and I really love him. I cannot leave him,” the girl said in her complaint.

The medical report of a 24-year-old law student, who accused four individuals of gangr*pe inside a Kolkata law college on June 25, has revealed signs of physical assault, including abrasion marks on her neck and chest. While there were no visible genital or oral injuries, doctors have not ruled out sexual assault, with forensic results pending. The survivor said she was attacked shortly after a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) meeting.
According to her statement, three men confined her and one of them allegedly r*ped her while the others stood guard. Despite pleading and resisting, she was overpowered, struck with a hockey stick, and threatened into silence. She even suffered a panic attack during the ordeal. Kolkata Police have now arrested four people in connection with the case, including a security guard, two students, and an alumnus of the college—Monojit Mishra—who is linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Monojit Mishra, the central accused in the recent Kolkata law college gang r*pe case, has had a long and controversial association with the institution. His journey with the college began back in 2007 when he first enrolled as a student. However, he dropped out, only to return a decade later in 2017 to pursue a BA LLB degree, which he completed in 2022.
During his extended time as a student, Mishra became deeply involved in campus politics. He rose to a leadership position within the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Reports of unruly behavior had trailed him for years, including a 2017 incident of vandalism in the principal’s office. Multiple allegations of harassment and misconduct surfaced during his time as a student, yet no formal police complaints were filed back then.
In 2021, his tenure as a student leader came to an end when he was removed from his post following growing concerns over his behavior. However, in 2023, Mishra reappeared on the college campus—this time as a contractual non-teaching staff member. His return raised eyebrows and has since become a key focus of the investigation, with police probing whether his lingering influence and past political connections may have helped him avoid consequences earlier.
He is a former student of the South Kolkata Law College and has been the ex-President of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at the institute and currently serves as the General Secretary of TMCP in the South Kolkata district. He is about 30 years old and is a criminal lawyer who practices at the Alipore court.
Away from the college, Mishra led a solitary life in Kalighat. He was estranged from his family, living alone while his mother and sister had moved away years ago. His grandmother passed away in 2023. His father, Robin Mishra, a local priest, has publicly stated that his son must be held accountable if found guilty.
“We stay in a 6 x 8 ft room. We worked so hard and rose from the lower strata of society to make him a lawyer. It is hard to believe that my son has done it,” Monojit Mishra’s father, who is a priest from Kalighat said.
According to Mishra’s father, they have been estranged for the last five years as he revealed, “We have not had any communication for the last five-six years. He is so busy. I live on my own money. Sometimes clients come enquiring about him, and I tell them this is not his chamber. Since this is his permanent address, his ATM cards and other things come. He collects it.”
