In Commemoration Of U.S. Hispanic Heritage Month, The Google Doodle Features An Animated Movie Honouring Tito Puente Life, Know His Wife And Family
The history, culture, and contributions of Americans with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America are honoured during the annual Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15.

Tito Puente: Who Was He?
Tito, a singer and entertainer who was born in Spanish Harlem of New York City in 1923, rose to fame all over the world. He belonged to the category of Puerto Ricans residing in the United States known as “Nuyorican” musicians. The musician made a name for himself as a percussionist, composer, lyricist, recording artist, and bandleader during the course of a career that lasted five decades. He was renowned for introducing Latin music to the American public.
A year ago today, the Tito Puente Monument was erected in East Harlem, New York City. He had acquired the titles “El Rey de las Timbales” and “The King of Latin music” for himself. Puente was a multi-instrumentalist who even played alto saxophone as the ship’s bandleader while serving in the Navy during World War II.
In 1948, he formed his own group, the Tito Puente Orchestra, and throughout the course of his career, he produced over 188 records. Ran Kan Kan, his first recorded soundtrack, is featured on today’s Google Doodle. Puente was famous not only as a legendary musician but also for his services to the Latino community. He reportedly established a scholarship programme in 1979 that provided more than 20 years of financial assistance to aspiring young Latin percussionists.
The Puerto Rican musician was honoured at the first-ever Latin Grammy Awards even after his passing in 2020. In his honour, Tito Puente Way was given to the street in Harlem where he was raised.
Puente’s marital status was married, Tito Puente’s wife’s name was Margaret Asencio and their children’s names are Richard Puente, Audrey with them getting divorced in 2000.

Carlos Aponte, a Puerto Rican artist who currently resides in New York, created the illustrations for today’s Doodle honouring Tito. In the backdrop of the video are music excerpts from Tito’s album.
It gives viewers a glance into his life and musical journey, which revolutionised various genres. It also demonstrates how he contributed to the international success of Caribbean music genres including guaracha, boogaloo, salsa, and mambo, among others.
