With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to expand from 32 to 48 teams, Uzbekistan took full advantage and secured their spot in the competition. The team currently ranks 57th in the world rankings and came in at second in Group A, behind already-qualified Iran. Following the achievement, their head coach, Timur Kapadze, praised his players’ grit and dedication throughout the campaign, stating:
We have come a long way and achieved an important result,” Kapadze said. “This victory belongs to all of us.”

Timur Kapadze who is Muslim by religion is a former midfielder and current head coach of Uzbekistan, who was born on September 5, 1981, in Fergana. He is of Ahiska-Turkish descent and rose from domestic leagues to international prominence. Timur started out as a player before becoming a coach following his retirement. He notably replaced Srecko Katanec as the new Uzbekistan head coach in January 2025. Timur prefers to keep his personal life relatively private.

Player Career and stats
Timur Kapadze started his professional journey in 1998 with Neftchi Ferghana and then played for Pakhtakor from 2002 to 2002–2007. During his time there, Timur won six league titles and six Uzbekistan Cups. Following which he joined Bunyodkor and continued his winning ways. He also had a notable career across international clubs, including spells at Incheon United (South Korea), Al Sharjah (UAE), and FC Aktobe (Kazakhstan). Timur eventually retired at Lokomotiv Tashkent in 2017 with numerous league and cup titles under his belt. He has seemingly earned 119 caps and scored several crucial goals for Uzbekistan.

Following his retirement, Kapadze briefly served as the interim coach for Uzbekistan in 2018 before officially taking over in 2025.
