Mingo County Emergency Management issued a cautionary advisory, urging local residents to take shelter in their homes due to the armed suspect at large in the Beech Creek area.
As stated by the West Virginia State Police in an official press release, the incident unfolded when the uniformed trooper was responding to a shooting report in Beech Creek. Upon arrival, the officers faced a hail of gunfire with Timothy Kennedy, which ultimately claimed the life of Sgt. Cory Maynard.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice expressed his condolences in a heartfelt statement. “I am absolutely heartbroken tonight to report that Sergeant Cory Maynard of the West Virginia State Police was fatally wounded in an incident this afternoon near Matewan,” he wrote. The governor went on to extend his sympathies and prayers to all of Trooper Maynard’s loved ones and the entire law enforcement community of West Virginia.
