Who is Sheikh Jassim

Interestingly, there is little to no information available about Sheikh Jassim. Following the massive bid, Nick Harris from Sporting Intelligence did some research on Sheikh Jassim and published a report.

The report begins with the statement:

So little is known about Sheikh Jassim, the Qatari bank manager who lodged a ยฃ4bn bid to buy Man Utd on Friday night, that even spokespeople working for him donโ€™t know his age, whether he is married or how he made a supposed fortune of billions.โ€

Plenty is known about his dad, Qatarโ€™s PM from 2007 to 2013, Sheikh Hamad, aka HBJ, who in several meetings with Prince Charles a few years ago gave the UKโ€™s current king ยฃ2.6m in cash in suitcases, a holdall and in Fortnum & Mason carrier bags.โ€

According to Nick, Jassim is one of Sheikh Hamadโ€™s 15 kids by two wives and he went to Sandhurst like his father. Jassim reportedly became chairman of one of Qatarโ€™s biggest banks, QIB aged 23, in 2005.

Jassim was reportedly a lifelong Man Utd ever since 1992, which was a year when Leeds won the Premier League. 10-year-old Sheikh Jassim who lived in Doha back then was however, a kid who saw what Alex Ferguson was about to make with Man Utd. Manchester United were back then a side without any top-flight title in 25 years.

Sheikh Jassim made a ยฃ6bn+ bid in cash to spend on Man United. According to the report, if he really does have this money, and earned it by working as a bank manager since 2005, he would have earned around ยฃ333m per year to come up with that cash.

Nick further states that he spent the whole of Friday evening and today (Saturday) speaking to people who know Jassim. And according to Nick, Jassim leads a very anonymous life that even his spokespeople donโ€™t know his precise age or his income sources. The report also states how Jassim is a genuine MUFC fan who attended โ€˜manyโ€™ matches as a fan.

Nick States:

I donโ€™t doubt for a nanosecond he is capable of doing all he claims in terms of buying and funding Man Utd. Iโ€™m less sure itโ€™s really unconnected to his position in the Qatari elite and close to those running a SWF worth $450bn.โ€

The official bid statement for Manchester United

Sheikh Jassim and his party have released the following statement confirming their bid, which read:

Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani today [Friday February 17] confirmed his submission of a bid for 100 per cent of Manchester United Football Club.

The bid plans to return the club to its former glories both on and off the pitch, and – above all – will seek to place the fans at the heart of Manchester United Football Club once more.

The statement reads that the bid will be completely debt free via Sheikh Jassim’s Nine Two Foundation. It also states that the same foundation will look to invest into the different aspects of the club such as the football teams, the training centre, the stadium, and wider infrastructure.
