In a listeria outbreak linked to an ice cream machine at a Frugals restaurant near Tacoma, three people have died and six others have been hospitalised. Frugals is a well-established burger chain in the Northwest.

Peter B. Stewart and Sheila G. Stewart are the joint owners of the restaurant. The decision-making process, continued unit expansion, and finances are all dependent on the two of them. 

Sheila has more than 30 years of experience in the restaurant industry, whereas Peter has a vast knowledge of operations, sales, and investments. The Stewart family owns and operates eight restaurants.

The first chain was opened in Port Angeles, Washington, in June 1988 and quickly gained popularity. In Tacoma, Washington, a second unit was added in September 1990. In October 2000, business operations commenced in Auburn, Washington. A year later, a second location in Kalispell, Montana, was successfully launched. Each store has a devoted following because it is dedicated to simplicity, efficiency, quality, and service.

The Listeria Infection Spread At The Frugals Tacoma

According to officials, if you consumed a Frugals milkshake in Tacoma between May 29 and August 7, 2023, and you are experiencing listeria symptoms, you should see a doctor. Investigators in Tacoma found Listeria in the improperly cleaned ice cream machines at 10727 Pacific Ave S.

Although the ice cream machines at the restaurant were shut off on August 8, Listeria can still spread illness up to 70 days later.

According to genetic testing of bacteria discovered in the milkshakes, six patients were admitted to hospitals between February 27 and July 22 as a result of the Listeria strain.

All six instances had weak immune systems, rendering them less able to fight off the illness. However, three people were eventually scummed to death.

Frugals Expressed Their Condolences And Apologies

Frugals wrote in a Facebook post that they were “heartbroken” and “deeply regret any harm our actions may have caused.”

It announced that it has halted milkshake sales at all of its locations and that the machines in other stores will be tested for Listeria. Furthermore, the infected equipment would be cleaned and put through fresh testing.

What Is Listeria Infection?

Listeria is an infection brought on by consuming food contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes bacterium. 

Most people who eat food contaminated with Listeria won’t get critically ill. In some situations, though, it can result in pregnancy-related disorientation, seizures, miscarriage, and stillbirth. People over 65, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
