Liverpool FC victory parade incident
A shocking and tragic incident took place during the Liverpool FC victory parade after 6:00 PM on Monday, May 26. The incident took place after a car collided with several pedestrians on Water Street, near the Liver Building and the parade route. Thousands of people had reportedly gathered to celebrate Liverpool FC’s Premier League triumph. Witness videos showed the vehicle driving into the crowd as people scrambled to avoid it.
Following the incident, police confirmed that they arrested a 53-year-old white British man whom they believe was the driver of the grey Ford Galaxy.
Just after 6pm BST on Water Street, about a mile from the end of the parade and after the team had passed, a vehicle collided with members of the crowd and video of the incident circulating online appears to show the vehicle speed up as it veers into pedestrians on both sides of the street, with people knocked to the floor off the windshield.
The incident lasted 20-30 seconds, and the first victim was thrown “about 20ft” in the air.
Merseyside police said a 53-year-old white British male from the Liverpool area was arrested at the scene and the force’s assistant chief constable Jenny Sims said the “horrific incident” was not being treated as terrorism. However, the name, religion and other details about the driver aren’t known yet.
As soon as the crash happened, emergency services rushed in and Merseyside Police stated how they were treating the crash as an isolated incident. The crash led to 27 people being hospitalized, with two of them, including a child, suffering serious injuries. The firefighters had to reportedly lift four people, including one child, from beneath the vehicle.
BBC reporter Matt Cole reported how the car moved through the crowd without stopping, while being chased by several men who banged on the car and threw objects at it. Cole estimated that the car was speeding at over 20 mph.
