The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Tennessee Vols 31–17 on Saturday night in Athens, but the final score doesn’t fully capture the essence of the match.
Why Tennessee lost to Georgia?
Against Georgia, Tennessee didn’t play its greatest game of the year. It wasn’t nearly as disruptive as the Vols’ defensive line has been this season. Tennessee’s wide receivers and linebackers also had a mixed night against the Bulldogs.
All night long, however, the Vols remained very much in the game. And perhaps the game would have gone somewhat differently if not for a long Georgia drive in the third quarter that was greatly aided by a few poor calls made by the officials.
Tennessee’s first possession of the second half ended without any offensive activity, and the game was knotted at 17. The Vols decided to punt the ball away from Georgia’s 36-yard line; but, after purposefully taking a delay of game penalty, UT punted from the 41-yard line.
Then, partly because of some terrible refereeing, the game’s momentum completely changed in Georgia’s favour.
The UT defence put the Bulldogs’ offense in a second-and-24 position when wide receiver Arian Smith was called for blatant offensive pass interference.
The Georgia 32-yard line then seemed to be forced into a third-and-nine by Tennessee’s defence.
The officiating staff mistakenly believed that a Tennessee defender had torn off the helmet by gripping the facemask after a Georgia player’s helmet fell off during a tackle, which was unfortunate for the Vols.
