Shah was responding to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Zakia Jafri’s appeal about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s exoneration, who served as Gujarat’s chief minister during the riot 20 years ago. Jafri’s appeal was deemed “devoid of merits” by a Supreme Court panel of three judges. Ehsan Jafri, a former Congressman, is Jafri’s husband, who got killed in the Gujrat riots.

“Antecedents of Teesta Setalvad need to be reckoned with,” a three-judge panel led by Justice AM Khanwilkar said in a statement on Friday, “and also because she has been vindictively victimising this lis [dispute] for her underlying political design by trying to exploit the emotional responses and sentiments of Zakia Jafri, the true victim of the circumstances.”

Teesta Setalvad: Who Is She?

A former journalist turned activist; Teesta Setlavad has been involved in the Gujarat riots case. She established Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), claiming that it will represent the interests of the riot victims in 2002. In numerous cases involving the pogrom, her organisation participated.

On the other hand, the Supreme Court declared on Friday that Seetalvad had used the petitioner Zakia Jafri’s emotions for “ulterior reasons” with her also tutoring the witnesses to lie infront of the Supreme Court SIT along with herself fabricating reports to keep peddling her propaganda. She and her spouse founded the periodical Communalism Combat in 1993. This was allegedly done in response to the nationwide rioting caused by the destruction of the Babri Masjid.

With Cedric Prakash, Anil Dharker, Alyque Padamsee, Javed Akhtar, Vijay Tendulkar, and Rahul Bose, she founded Citizens for Justice and Peace in 2002 to handle the legal work for the victims of the 2002 riots.

Husband

In 1962, Seetalvad was conceived in a Gujarati household. Atul Setalvad, her father, was a Mumbai-based attorney. The first Attorney General of India was her paternal grandpa, MC Setalvad.

Javed Anand, a journalist who later became a fighter for minority rights, refers to Setalvad as her husband. They have two children, one son and a daughter.

Net Worth

The BJP has consistently criticised Setalvad for milking the plight of the 2002 victims to obtain foreign donations, a claim that she has refuted. The federal investigation agency CBI filed a case against her and her husband in 2015, alleging that Sabrang Communications, the company they run, received foreign funding in violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), receiving $290,000 (Rs 2 crore) lakh from of the Ford Foundation despite being ineligible.

Citizens for Justice and Peace of Setalvad had their FCRA licence revoked by the Indian home minister in 2016 under the Modi administration. As a result, the CJP was no longer able to collect funds from abroad. The theft of monies collected in the name of riot victims from 2002 was also the subject of an FIR filed in Gujarat against Setalvad and her husband.

Regarding Setalvad’s net worth, nothing is known but it runs into several 100 crores. Born on 6 February, 1962, she is aged 60 years.
