For those who are curious, let us tell you, Women’s World Cup 2023 will introduced us with a new mascot, Tazuni, which was unveiled ahead of the tournament at the group stage draw.
If you’re unfamiliar with Tazuni, let us make it clear, it is a penguin based on the Eudyptula minor species, that is an endemic to New Zealand. It closely relates to Eudyptula novaehollandiae species, which founds in Australia and New Zealand both.
As per the FIFA, the new mascot is a 15-year-old midfielder, who reportedly fell in love with football after playing the match on the beach one fatefull day.
The name of the mascot is the combination of the “Tasman Sea,” which separates Australia and New Zealand and “Unity.”
In a earlier conversation, the Secretary General of FIFA, Fatma Samoura said that, “Tazuni stands for everything which makes the Women’s World Cup unique, and her story will resonate with millions of young fans around the world.”
“We look forward to her playing a starring role in the tournament and helping to inspire the next generation as we continue to take women’s football and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Beyond Greatness.”
However, FIFA could have picked out two different mascots for this year’s World Cup due to the tournament being co-hosted but it is being believed that Tazuni represents both the nation’s.
As we aforementioned, it is a penguin genius native to both nation’s, while its backstory has it born in the Tasman Sea, which connects to both countries.
Women’s World Cup 2023 has a strong theme of Unity and Tazuni is a unique nod to it.
In another news, FIFA’s Chief women’s football officer, stated that, “Tazuni is the perfect mascot for this tournament, exemplifying all that is positive about the biggest women’s football event ever staged, and our sport-obsessed host nations who are ready to welcome the world.”
