The hunt for a missing paddleboarder on Martha’s Vineyard ended tragically when the family’s longtime personal chef’s body was found floating in the water.

The Massachusetts authorities identified the deceased, who had died while paddleboarding on Edgartown Great Pond, a sizable coastal pool connected to the Atlantic Ocean. He was Tafari Campbell, 45, of Dumfries, Virginia who was a Christian by religion.

Campbell had previously prepared meals for Barack Obama and his family while they were residents of the White House.

While Sherise Campbell, Campbell’s wife, stated she was “heartbroken,” the Obama family called Campbell “a truly wonderful man.”

At 7.40 p.m. Sunday, first responders were called to the Obama family’s country home after a man drowned. The property is a roughly 7,000-square-foot estate surrounded by 30 acres of land close to Turkeyland Cove on Martha’s Vineyard.

Authorities from the Dukes County Sheriff’s Department, Air Wing, State Police patrols, and Edgartown Fire arrived on the site. The man struggled to stay on the surface, but according to a witness who was paddleboarding with him, he went underneath and never came back up.

Along with the US Coast Guard’s (USCG) aircraft support, search efforts included the participation of flight crews, dive teams, and boat crews using side-scan sonar. Later that day, the victim’s paddleboard and cap were discovered.

The Massachusetts State Police (MSP) said in a statement on Monday morning that the search had been suspended while they “assessed the next steps.” Soon, it was announced that afternoon that a body had been discovered at around 10 a.m. on Monday.

Although the cause of death has not been determined, the law enforcement agency’s press statement was labelled “drowning” on its website.
