Career
Szymon Marciniak is one of the top-rated referees in men’s soccer. He has worked as a FIFA international referee ever since 2011 and officiated his first game in the Ekstraklasa back in April 2009. He eventually made his Champions League debut in September 2014 and has refereed two World Cups—2018 and 2022.
The 42-year-old has also officiated four UCL games this season, along with 27 matches in the domestic Polish league. Back in December 2022, Szymon oversaw Argentina’s penalty shootout victory over France in the World Cup final. While doing so, he became the first Polish referee to officiate the tournament’s final match.
The following year, in June, Marciniak became the first Pole to referee the men’s Champions League final. Interestingly, UEFA is currently conducting a probe into Szymon Marciniak following his participation in an event linked to a far-right movement. Marciniak has come out to apologise for his attendance at the event in Katowice, stating:
Upon reflection and further investigation, it has become evident that I was gravely misled and completely unaware of the true nature and affiliations of the event in question.
I had no knowledge that it was associated [with] a Polish extreme-right movement. Had I been aware of this fact, I would have categorically declined the invitation.”
