Stance against inclusion of male-bodied athletes in womenโs competitions
Back in November of 2021, Gaines came across an article on Swim Swam mentioning about a female swimmer who had achieved a national record time in the 200-yard freestyle. As a swimmer, Gaines was expectedly impressed by it. However, upon reading the news further she felt a concern about the inclusion of male-bodied athletes in womenโs competitions.
Gaines strongly believes that allowing biological males to compete in womenโs sports will not only compromise the integrity of female sports but also make women more vulnerable. An dshe is not alone in this belief. Many female athletes who compete in the SEC and Ivy League all share her concerns.
Despite her stance against the issue facing much controversy, her school also gives her the full support to speak out on this issue. Gaines emphasizes that her objection is clearly not a personal attack against any transgender individual. The 22-year-old is instead opposed to the policies set up by athletic governing bodies allowing male-bodied athletes to compete in female sports.
Gaines and other female athletes are simply speaking out in order to preserve the spirit of womenโs sports. All they wish to see is that womenโs sports remain fair and competitive.
