She grew up with her younger sister Ajopa. From her childhood days, Swastika liked movies. Her favourite movies include Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Mukherjee attended Gokhale Memorial School, St. Teresa’s Secondary School, and Carmel School in Kolkata. She is a graduate in History from Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
She got married to Promit Sen who is the son of Rabindra Sangeet vocalist Sagar Sen in 1998. At the time of her wedding, she was just eighteen years of age. The two-year marriage was filled with a number of difficult moments. When Swastika got pregnant, she accused her husband of beating her and preventing her from entering his house. She lodged a complaint of abuse and dowry against him. Later on, these accusations were dropped and Promit was declared innocent.
Swastika admitted in a press conference that the charges imposed on her husband were false. As a result, Promit was found accountable for ₹7.7 crore ($1.7 million) in damages after her brother filed a lawsuit against her in the Calcutta High Court. Anwesha who is her only child from the marriage was born in 2000.

Swastika Mukherjee learnt dance at the Ananda Shankar Centre for Culture in 2001. Her debut was marked in 2001 with Hemanter Pakhi film. She started dating her co-star Jeet while working for Mastan film. Together, they featured a number of films including Partner, Pitribhumi, Krishnakanter Will, Sathihara, Priyotoma, and Kranti. During, Brake Fail set, she started dating Parambrata Chatterjee.
Pramit Sen brought a case against Chatterjee for criminal adultery and enticement of a married lady because she was still his legally wedded wife. 2010 saw them part ways when Chatterjee relocated to Bristol.
Following a suicide attempt, Mukherjee was admitted to the hospital in May 2014. Kolkata police arrested Mukherjee’s then lover Suman Mukhopadhyay.
She was seen playing Dolly Mehra in the Patal Lok series.
