In a recent development, Swaminathan Janakiraman, the Managing Director of the State Bank of India (SBI), was chosen by the Appointments Committee of the Government to fill the position of Deputy Governor at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
On Tuesday, Janakiraman’s appointment was formally announced by the Department of Personnel and Training. Upon joining, he will serve a tenure of three years, starting from the date of his joining or until further instructions, whichever occurs earlier.

Swaminathan Janakiraman will be taking over from Deputy Governor M.K. Jain, whose term concludes this month. Jain was appointed to this critical position inside the RBI in 2018. Before that, he was the CEO of IDBI Bank and Indian Bank.
Traditionally, one of the deputy governors of the central bank is selected from the public sector banks. Presently, the other three deputy governors of the RBI are Michael D. Patra, T. Rabi Sankar, and Rajeshwar Rao. The position of deputy governor comes with a fixed monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh, in addition to allowances.

Swaminathan Janakiraman is a renowned Indian banking executive. He has been in the news because he was appointed Deputy Governor at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Swaminathan Janakiraman completed his high school at Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu in 1981 and completed his B.com in 1984 from University of Madras – Govt. College Of Men, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.
He received his B. Com. in commerce, corporate accounting, and banking degree from the University of Madras. Thereafter, he completed a recognized associate’s degree in banking, banking, and economics at the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance in Mumbai, India.
Subsequently, at the National Institute of Business Management, he earned an executive MBA in risk management and international trade finance.
In 2012, he moved abroad to pursue ‘Certificate for Documentary Credit Specialists’ qualification at IFS School of Finance in London and in 2015, Swaminathan Janakiraman went to National Institute of Business Management to pursue MBA where he specialised in various skills like Risk Management and International Trade Finance.

His career
In December 1988, Swaminathan Janakiraman began his career with the State Bank of India (SBI) as a manager. Over the course of 34 years, he held a number of positions within the company, including branch manager, chief manager, AGM and Relationship manager, VP and head of trade finance, deputy general manager of the financial institution’s group, chief general manager, deputy managing director strategy, chief digital officer, and deputy MD. At last, he became the managing director of SBI.
According to the information on his LinkedIn page, he also served as a Nominee Director of SBI on the Boards of Yes Bank, Jio Payments Bank, NPCI, and the Bank of Bhutan, an SBI JV.
