Who is Gabriel Medina? 

Born in São Sebastião, São Paulo, and raised in Maresias, Gabriel Medina is the son of Simone Pinto Medina and Claudio de Jesus Ferreira. Medina began surfing at the age of four and won his first national championship, the Rip Curl Grom Search in the Sub-12 category, in Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, at 11.

Gabriel Medina turned professional at 15 in 2009 and has secured 18 World Surf League Championship Tour event victories over his 15-year career. He won the World Surf League World Championships in 2014, 2018, and 2021. On March 3, 2024, Medina won the men’s final at the ISA World Surfing Games, qualifying as Brazil’s third competitor for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Medina has collaborated with shaper Johnny Cabianca since 2008. Medina, who uses around 100 surfboards annually with volumes ranging from 28.5 to 29.1 liters, achieved his first victory on a Cabianca Surfboard at the Quiksilver Pro France 2015. For Triple Crown events, he occasionally rides boards shaped by Wade Tokoro. In September 2020, Medina launched his own line of user-friendly softboards called “Medina Softboards.”
