55-year-old Alexandre de Moraes was born on 13 December 1968. He is married and is father to three kids. Alexandre de Moraes attended the University of São Paulo’s Law School, where he graduated in 1991 and after completing his studies, Moraes worked as a professor of constitutional law at USP and later at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV).

Moraes began his judicial career in 2002 at the age of 33 when he became the youngest Secretary of Public Security in Sao Paulo.


His wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes is a well-known attorney. She works as a coordinator and partner at the renowned legal company Barci de Moraes Sociedade de Advogados, which is renowned for its strategic legal analysis and individualized client care. Viviane graduated from the Universidade Paulista (UNIP) with a degree in law and another degree in marketing and propaganda.

From around 2020, Alexandre de Moraes has drawn significant attention from the public both domestically and internationally for ordering numerous arrests, obtaining search warrants, and terminating the social media accounts of people and organizations suspected of organizing coups and disseminating false information. He has also blocked nationwide access to popular platforms like Twitter and Telegram that have defied his court orders.

Former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies have been critical of De Moraes due to his leadership of Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court and some of the decisions he made during the country’s general election in 2022, including the spreading of unfounded conspiracy theories.

Following the assault on the Brazilian Congress in 2023, de Moraes issued a number of contentious court orders.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes has become one of Brazil’s most powerful and divisive figures as he investigates claims that far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro has attacked democracy.


The owner of X, Elon Musk, who describes himself as a “free-speech absolutist,” has been attacking Moraes in recent months, calling him a dictator and threatening to disobey the judge’s orders to restrict users who are discovered to be disseminating false material.
