Sudiksha Thirumalesh, age 19, battled a rare mitochondrial condition and fought being moved to end-of-life palliative care until her untimely passing last week from a cardiac arrest. On Friday, her family requested a Court of Protection order that would allow them to publicly reveal her name.
Outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London, Sudiksha’s brother, Varshan Chellamal Thirumalesh, made a statement:
After a year of struggle and heartache, we can finally say our beautiful daughter and sister’s name in public without fear: She is Sudiksha. She is Sudiksha Thirumalesh – not ST.
He added,
Despite our grief and the continuing shock over everything we have been through, today a part of us is at peace. Sudiksha was a wonderful daughter and sister who we will cherish forever. We cannot imagine life without her.
On Monday, the court is expected to rule on whether the NHS Trust and the medical personnel who treated Sudiksha Thirumalesh may also be publicly identified. The family desires the ability to openly share their story and provide assistance to others facing similar circumstances.
Since then, Sudiksha has become the talk of the town, with many people trying to find out more about her. So, here’s what we know about her:
Who was Sudiksha Thirumalesh?
Sudiksha Thirumalesh was an Indian-origin UK resident. She has been in the news because of her prolonged legal battle with the NHS over access to experimental treatment.
She was born and brought up in Birmingham, United Kingdom, and holds British nationality. Her father’s name is Thirumalesh Chellamal Hemachandran, and her mother’s name is Revathi Malesh Thirumalesh. She also has a brother named Varshan Chellamal Thirumalesh.
Sudiksha Thirumalesh was suffering from a rare mitochondrial condition and succumbed to it on 12 September 2023. At the time of her death, she was just 19 years old.
How did she die?
When she was very ill, the hospital decided to send her to palliative care against her and her parents’ wishes; they preferred that she get nucleoside treatment in Canada.
This led to a legal dispute, during which her name and that of the implicated NHS trust were both limited by court order, and she was only referred to as “ST.” In August 2023, it was determined that she lacked the mental capacity to make her own medical decisions. She later passed away from cardiac arrest and respiratory failure.
