Steve Banerjee Professional Career
Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee was a Bengali Indian who was born on the 8th of October in 1946 and hailed from Bombay which is presently known as Mumbai. As there’s not much known about his early life that was spent in India. Steve immigrated to the United States and started working as a Mobil gas station operator before delving into the nightclub business.
Steve Banerjee’s one of the first nightclub businesses was running a Los Angeles establishment where female mud-wrestling competitions were a common feature. It was this Los Angeles bar, Destiny II that Steve later on renamed as Chippendales. The shows he organized with the promoter Paul Snider were not professionally presented. This prompted Banerjee to start working with Nick De Noia who was a well-known producer and an Emmy Award winner.
In 1979, Steve Banerjee revolutionized the striptease industry by introducing a male stripper to his list of performers at Chippendales. The women, exclusive dance nights at his club became a sensation. Steve went on to open nightclubs in Denver, New York, and Dallas.
Steve Banerjee Arrest And Family
In 1987, he hired a former police officer to murder De Noia and Steve even planned for murdering 3 more people. Steve Banerjee was sentenced to 26 years in prison for his shocking crime. Before the day of his final hearing, the then-48-year-old show promoter committed suicide.
Steve married his love of life, his wife, Irene in the 1980s and the duo was parents to two children and after his death. Irene was announced to be the sole owner of his properties including the Chippendales establishments too.
In the early morning of October 23, 1994, hours before he was due to be sentenced, Banerjee was found dead in his cell, having hanged himself and reports stated that while Banerjee was depressed, it was not thought he would take his own life. His net worth stood at $3 million.
