Now, the death of this young on a dark South Carolina road is being investigated as a homicide.
After the former South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh has been convicted of murdering his wife and son, the whole limelight is on the Murdaugh family at large, including people who have died that had ties to the family including Stephen Smith.

Stephen Smith death cause
Stephen Smith, a high school class fellow of Alex Murdaugh’s surviving son Buster Murdaugh, unfortunately, died in 2015. An autopsy that has been filed by the Medical University of South Carolina suggested that Smith died of “blunt head trauma which is sustained from a motor vehicle crash,” but left the cause of his death as “undetermined.”
This accident took place in the area of Sandy Run Road which is situated in Hampton County, on the outskirts of South Carolina, which is just 15 miles away from the Murdaugh family’s Moselle estate based in Islandton, South Carolina.
What happened to Stephen Smith?
The body of 19-year-old Stephen Smith was found during the early morning hours of 8th July 2015, on a rural road which is in Hampton County, South Carolina, as per the autopsy report.
His body was found about 2 to 3 miles from his vehicle, which ran out of gas, after the reports of the autopsy. Autopsy has posited that Smith was walking home.
The Pathologists at the University of South Carolina determined Smith had been struck by some vehicle and unfortunately he “died as the result of blunt head trauma,” according to the autopsy report.
The report also tells that ‘there was no evidence of the projectiles or bullet fragments in his body, ruling out the gunfire.’
Smith’s mother, Sandy Smith, has expressed skepticism over the actual cause of her son’s death. Sandy Smith responded, ‘she can’t believe hit-and-run was a cause and she believes that her son was badly beaten from the way his body was found on the road.’
Stephen Smith’s connection with Buster Murdaugh
Buster and Stephen both attended Hampton High School and this information was confirmed by an attorney of the Murdaugh family. In the Murdaugh murders documentary, a science teacher named Sam Crews revealed that there was a rumor that Stephen and Buster were friends and Stephen was tutoring Buster.
Morgan Doughty who was Smith’s friend said in the documentary, ‘there was a rumor of Buster and Smith being intimate.’
