The Capuchin friars offered prayers for the jockey at a ceremony at the Sanctuary of Sant’Ignazio da Laconi in Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital, on Thursday last week. Among those who paid tribute was trainer Robert Cowell as well. He said:
Oh no… This is so tragic and sad beyond words. A lovely lovely man with a wonderful sense of humour and a big future. “
The trainer prayed for his family and friends. ITV and Sky Sports Racing broadcaster Leonna Mayor also spoke about him calling him “fun loved person.”
The New South Wales Jockeys Association, which had been supporting the rider and his family and friends, revealed the death of the 23-year-old, originally from Sardinia, on Wednesday.
While the other two riders and all of the horses were unharmed, 23-year-old Cherchi was treated on the track for around an hour before being taken to a hospital in the Australian capital. Fallon called his fall a ‘freak accident’.
