Wearing spectacles, 25-year-old Stanley Omondi managed to get through the fourth round of the competition by not speaking a word. Omondi registered himself in the chess tournament as Millicent Awuor and at first, he did not arouse suspicion as “wearing a hijab is normal”, said chess Kenya president Bernard Wanjala.

“One of the red flags we also noticed [was] the shoes, he was wearing more masculine shoes, than feminine,” Wanjala said.

Stanley is university student, who needed cash and disguised himself as a female chess player by donning a burqa and participated in Kenya Open Chess Championship in Nairobi, which boasted an impressive prize fund of $42,000.

He wouldn’t talk to anyone at the Chess Championship and instead used hand motions to talk, probably to hide his voice. After he beat Gloria Jumba, a former national winner, and Ampaira Shakir, a highly rated Ugandan player, in back-to-back games, people started to think he wasn’t who he said he was.

Staff at the tournament were at first reluctant to help, but they finally pulled the man into a private room and asked for his ID. He finally told the truth and said he was a college student who needed money.

The man was kicked out of the Chess Championship, and his opponents got the points he had earned. The incident is the latest strange thing to happen in the world of chess. Just recently, a player was accused of cheating by using vibrating anal beads.

Chess community outraged over cheating incident

People who like to play chess are upset about what happened during the Chess Championship, and they are talking about how to stop similar things from happening in the future. In a statement, the Kenya Open Chess Championship’s organisers condemned the cheating and apologised to the players and fans who were hurt by it.

This issue also makes people wonder about the fairness of the game and what needs to be done to make sure that everyone has the same chance of winning. Chess has always been seen as a game that requires intelligence and strategy, but recent scandals have brought it to the top of the news for all the wrong reasons. It’s still not clear how the chess community will deal with these problems and fix the sport’s image.
