Who is Saurav Ghosal?

Saurav Ghosal was born on August 10, 1986, in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was born to his father, Prakash Ghosal, who was the head of the Kolkata Racquet Club, and his mother, Nupur. He attended Lakshmipat Singhania Academy in Kolkata. 

Saurav Ghosal’s Personal Life

Saurav is married to Diya Pallika, who is the sister of Indian professional squash player Dipika Pallika Kartik. The couple tied the knot in 2017.

Saurav Ghosal’s Career

Saurav Ghosal, at 37, continues to be the flag-bearer of Indian squash and shows no signs of slowing down, a pro for more than 20 years, seven medals in Asian Games and on the podium every time since 2006, 2 bronze at CWG, mixed doubles gold at World Doubles Championship, third at World Cup, besides multiple PSA Tour titles.

Saurav had reached a career-high world ranking of World No. 10 in April 2019 and is ranked 16 in 2023.

When Saurav Ghosal was eight years old, he started playing squash. He joined the Kolkata Racquet Club when he was young and started playing squash there.

Later, he moved from Kolkata to Chennai, shortly after finishing his education. He enrolled in the ICL Squash Academy and started taking lessons from Major (Rtd) Maniam and Cyrus Poncha. Later, Saurav Ghosal joined the West Yorkshire-based Pontefract Squash Club and began practising under the direction of Malcolm Willstrop.

Saurav Ghosal’s Career High

  • In 2004, Saurav Ghosal became the first squash player from India to win the Under-19 Squash title at the British Junior Open championships in Sheffield, England, by defeating Egyptian opponent Adel El Said.
  • He won the Dutch Open championships in June 2002 after winning the German Open (U-17) in May 2002.
  • At the 2006 New Delhi National Championships, Saurav Ghosal triumphed over Gaurav Nandrajog to win the title of national squash champion.
  • At the Asian Games in Doha in 2006, Saurav Ghosal won a bronze medal. 
  • In 2007, the President of India presented him with the Arjuna Award in recognition of his victory in this competition. 
  • His PSA world ranking was 27 in 2010.
  • In 2013, Saurav Ghosal made history by becoming the first Indian to go to the quarterfinals of the World Squash Championship in Manchester, England.
  • In 2014, he bagged a silver medal in individual singles at the Asian Games and became the first Indian to win a medal in Asian Games in this sport.
  • At the PSA event in Kolkata, he won 35k in 2015.
  • In 2016, he earned gold at the South Asian Games in Team and bronze in singles.
  • The same year, he won the National Championships in India.
  • In 2018, he won the Vedanta Indian Open title.
  • He reached the 10th spot in the squash world rankings in April 2019. 
  • In 2021, he was appointed as the President of the Professional Squash Association (PSA).
  • Ghosal participated in the Birmingham-hosted Commonwealth Games in 2022, where he made Commonwealth Games history by earning India’s first-ever singles bronze medal.
