The 1965 Indo-Pakistani War air battle between the Indian and Pakistani Air Forces served as the inspiration for the action-thriller, which is based on actual events. Known as “Wings of Fire,” Squadron Leader Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya was the true hero of the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War.
Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya was born in Kodagu, Coorg, Karnataka, on December 24, 1932 to Ajjamada and Neelamma and was 5ft 9in tall. He was Dr. Bopayya’s son and had done his graduation in science. He received his pilot’s commission in the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1954 and taught at the Air Force Flying College at the start of the 1965 war. He piloted the Mystere IVa fighter bomber and was assigned to No. 1 “Tigers” Squadron.
Squadron Leader Devayya participated in an aircraft strike operation that travelled to Pakistan’s Sargodha airbase while serving as a senior flight instructor. He joined the air fight even though he was a standby in case one of the original 12 planes dropped out.

Pakistani pilot Flt. Lt. Amjad Hussain’s PAF F-104 Starfighter intercepted Devayya but he managed to avoid the Starfighter’s assaults. He shot down the enemy pursuer’s plane but in the process his aircraft was damaged and he went missing and presumably he died in Pakistani territory in the Kot Naka Village due to a plane crash.
Ajjamada was married to Sundri Devayya, a role played by Sara Ali Khan in Sky Force and the two had two kids, daughters namely Preetha and Smitha and was survived by them after he passed away at the age of 32.
Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya career
The only Indian Air Force officer to get the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) posthumously is Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya MVC. The Param Vir Chakra is the highest honour for wartime valor, with the Maha Vir Chakra coming in second.
‘Wings of Fire’ Devayya was attacked by an enemy aircraft while on a strike mission on the Pakistani airfield Sargodha during the 1965 India-Pakistan War. He destroyed the enemy pursuitr’s aircraft, but his plane was damaged in the process, and he disappeared. He most likely passed away on Pakistani soil. He received the MVC award posthumously in 1988, twenty-three years later.
The IAF initially reported Devayya missing and then declared him dead because they had no idea what had happened to him. Later, in 1979, the Pakistani Air Force commissioned a British author, John Fricker, to produce a battle narrative based on Pakistani sources.
