Who is Isa Guha?

Born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, to Indian parents Barun and Roma Guha who are both eye surgeons and emigrated from Calcutta in the 1970s, Isa who is a Bengali Hindu was introduced to cricket by her elder brother at the age of eight. By 13, her exceptional talent had earned her a place in the Development England side. She attended Wycombe High School before pursuing higher education at University College London, where she graduated with a BSc in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Her father played cricket for Oxford University and she has two younger brothers and one sister named Samrat, Kavin and Isara. She founded the Isa Guha Foundation in memory of her father, who died of cancer in 2010 and older brother Kavin who was killed in a car accident in 1993.

Isa attended Heathmount School in Ascot before attending Epsom Girls’ Grammar School, where she completed her A-levels. She then studied at Brunel University London, earning an MSc in Sports Science. During her studies at Brunel, she also worked as a teaching assistant at the Surrey Cricket Board’s cricket center, Guildford.

Guha started playing cricket at the age of six in her native London. She began playing for the England Under-19s and was a Surrey Women’s First XI regular from 2003–2009. Her domestic form was awarded the brand new England women’s contract in 2004.

Guha’s cricket career began with her Test debut at just 17 against India during their 2002 England tour. As the first woman of Indian heritage to represent England in cricket, she was honored as the BBC Asian Network Sports Personality of the Year in 2002. Integral to England’s 2009 World Cup triumph, Guha retired from international cricket in 2012 but continued to play county cricket for Berkshire.
